About R&B Music Therapy

Hello! My name is Ellie Choi, and I am the founder of Rhythm & Bloom Music Therapy, based in the Denver metropolitan area of Colorado. We provide in-person, telehealth, and hybrid music therapy services for clients of all ages and backgrounds.

Our services support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, age-related neurological conditions, impulse control challenges, behavioral and emotional needs, and depression. We also address goals related to speech, communication, motor function, and cognitive skills. Sessions use music as a therapeutic tool to promote well-being, strengthen skills for daily living, and encourage personal growth.

My journey in music therapy began while I was pursuing a master’s degree in piano performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. By chance, I had the opportunity to assist Marjorie Lucas in teaching piano to children with special needs. I quickly discovered that music could positively influence not only musical development but also broader developmental and therapeutic outcomes.

This experience inspired me to pursue a master’s degree in music therapy at the State University of New York at New Paltz. During my training, I gained extensive clinical experience in hospitals, including radiation oncology, palliative care, intensive care, and pediatric settings. I also worked in schools, community-based day programs serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, nursing and rehabilitation settings, and the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy.

After moving to Colorado, I worked as a full-time music therapist with Metro Music Therapy before establishing my own practice. At Rhythm & Bloom, I integrate humanistic, multicultural, neurological, psychological, and musical approaches to design individualized sessions that address each client’s unique needs and goals.

I invite you to learn more about me and Rhythm & Bloom Music Therapy. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I look forward to connecting with you!

What is our philosophy?

Music lessons focus on developing musical skills such as technique, performance, and music theory. In contrast, music therapy uses music as a therapeutic tool to address non-musical goals in areas such as physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. Through evidence-based techniques, music therapy can support speech and language development, emotional regulation, behavioral skills, sensory integration, and fine and gross motor abilities, depending on each client’s individual needs.

At Rhythm & Bloom Music Therapy, we believe that everyone has musical potential and a unique way of connecting with music, regardless of experience, diagnosis, or ability. Music is a universal language that can foster connection, healing, self-expression, and empowerment. We use each person’s natural response to music to build upon their strengths and support meaningful growth.

Our work supports children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, young adults navigating impulse-control or mood-related challenges, and older adults living with neurologic conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. By integrating evidence-based Neurologic Music Therapy techniques with creativity, warmth, and compassion, We help clients work toward goals related to communication, movement, cognition, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.

Our approach is client-centered, family-inclusive, and culturally responsive. We strive to create a supportive environment in which individuals and their caregivers can discover meaningful ways to use music to enhance daily life, strengthen relationships, and promote each person’s unique potential.

Music therapy can benefit individuals with or without a formal diagnosis and across a wide range of needs and abilities. No musical experience or talent is required.

Music therapy services are available to individuals of all ages. My primary clinical focus includes children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, young adults with impulse control challenges or mood disorders who want to incorporate music into their daily lives, and older adults with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

The initial 15 to 20 minute trial session explores the client’s response to music, strengths, needs, and fit with the therapist. Afterward, an individualized treatment plan with targeted goals and objectives will be provided.
